Natural Weather Reports
One of the best things about the modern
world is that access to information is quick and easy. That is,
in most places where you have electricity. But what can you do
if you’re out in the wild, with no Internet and no television
or radio? Practical information such as weather forecasts can
be very important if you plan to go on long trips. There are
basically three things you can do to avoid surprises.
One thing, and probably the easiest, is to check the weather
forecast in advance. You can check weather websites on the
Internet before you leave, to know what you should expect. Many
websites will give you information regarding the weather in a
particular location and, for periods of one or two weeks, the
forecasts you can find are pretty reliable.
Pretty reliable, however, does not mean perfect. The trouble
is that once you’re away from civilization and out of the
broadcast range of radio stations, checking the forecast can
become difficult. If you can still use your mobile phone, you
can either call someone back home and ask them about the
weather report, or, if a weather service is available from your
provider, you can have forecasts sent to your phone every day.
Or, if you can connect to the Internet using your phone, the
solution is simpler, but don’t be shocked when you get your
phone bill.
Still, both solutions we have considered so far rely on the
possibility to check the news, whether directly or indirectly.
If you have no means of communication whatsoever, you’ll have
to learn to understand nature’s signs. You can get instant
weather reports from camp wildlife. For instance, birds flying
noticeably low means it will soon rain, while the croaking of
night frogs means there’s fine weather ahead.
Try to learn as much as you can about interpreting these
signs before you leave home. This way, you won’t have to worry
about unexpected weather changes.
