Where are the Chairs?

In many gatherings like birthdays or meetings, a seating arrangement is expected. This is useful for controlling the crowd and at the same time providing them a comfortable spot to enjoy the event. Different seating arrangements have different effects; addressing the different targets of a gathering. A familiar seating arrangement we all know is the classroom setup. Restaurants use seating arrangements to strategically control the flow of customer and waiter traffic.

When hosting a party, think of the possible communication flow among your guests. Your party set up should encourage conversations. Bear in mind that your guests did not come to attend a seminar; they came to eat, meet people and have a blast.

Setting a certain seat plan may foster exclusivity among peers. This can cause other people either trapped in groups of friends to feel awkward and shy. You can prevent this by getting rid of the seat plan. Take away the seats as well. A standing party is great in involving your guests in games and socializing. This also allows more eye contact around the room compared to being seated somewhere and having to crane your neck all the time. Without tables and chairs to hide in, each person is exposed. It can either push confidence in them or make them self-conscious. But that’s all right because you’re there to lighten things up and help them enjoy the night.

Having no seats in your party doesn’t necessarily mean it will be an uncomfortable event. Plan the party layout with the primary gathering room for mingling or dancing. Provide pocket spaces with rugs and pillow for tired legs and comfort seekers. Strategically place the food table and separate it from the bar. Make your guests navigate the entire area so they don’t get stuck in one place.
